One story is that in California, the seeds were imported to start tomber plantations for railroad ties. One variant is that the railroads got swindled, because all kinds of eucaplytus seed were delivered, not just the one they wanted. Another variant is that the wood turned out to be useless for railraod ties afterall, because it was so oily that the spikes would
hold well, and would work loose.
